Summer is in full swing here in Abbotsford, and something we’re sure you’re wondering is, “What the heck are my kids going to do today?” The summer blues can hit kids pretty hard, especially if they’re feeling bored or they’re not sure what else there is to see and do (and we’re sure ‘school’ is not the answer they’re looking for!).
Abbotsford events shouldn’t be the only thing to wait for when it comes to kids. While we love checking out things like Agrifair and the International Airshow, these events only happen once a year and maybe by the time you’re reading this, it’s too late—the event has come and gone, so another day of boredom ensues. Lucky for kids, there are still lots of things they can do this summer in Abbotsford BC! All of these activities and some of the venues we mention here make for great birthday party ideas too, if your children have a birthday in the summer!
If you have yet to pick out a summer camp your kid will enjoy, there are still plenty to choose from! Maan Farms offers an agricultural summer camp that will not only educate your children on farming but also entertain them. If you want them to stay active without fear of sunburn or heatstroke, recreation centres such as the Play Abby Activity Centre offer some cool opportunities such as indoor laser tag! If your kid loves to paint or draw, this is the ideal time of the year to let them get artsy with sidewalk chalk or enrolling them in an art class.
Go Berry Picking

Abbotsford is home to many, many different farms and markets. Maan Farms, Krause Berry Farms, and Taves Family Farms Applebarn are some of the best kinds! Lots of berries are in season right now for picking and these three locations offer a U-Pick to anyone interested.
If you’re going to Maan Farms, there are lots of farm animals for the kids to pet and ice cream to sample after picking berries! Applebarn offers some online kids activities as well as a playground, a petting barn, brand new pedal carts, and more. At Krause Berry Farms, special family-friendly events take place almost regularly and they’re a great place to be in time for one of their barbecues, tractor train rides, and even outdoor movie nights!
Don’t forget to apply sunscreen before going to the U-Picks. You can also bring your own bucket for picking!
Spend the Day at a Local Recreation Centre
A recreation centre is great because some things like playing sports and swimming indoors is ideal when it’s just too hot outside. Centres like the Abbotsford Recreation Centre and the Play Abby Activity Centre feature all sorts of cool, engaging things for kids to do such as:
- Laser tag
- Indoor playground
Different admissions and schedules apply to each activity centre.
Have a Treat at Ann Marie’s Café

Nothing says summer for a kid quite like ice cream on a hot day, and Ann Marie’s Café deals the treats out in spades! Kids will surely enjoy one of their sundaes, banana splits, or ice cream floats, while you can check out all of the cool 1950s and vintage memorabilia decorating their walls! Their burgers and fries also make for excellent summer meals when the kitchen in your home is too hot to cook in.
Go to the Zoo
Though technically this hotspot is located on the outskirts of Abbotsford, it’s too cool an activity we can’t help but talk about it! The Greater Vancouver Zoo is filled with all kinds of ways to meet the animals here, whether it’s by hitching a ride on the Safari mini train or going on a quadra-cycle with the family. There is also a restaurant, a gift shop, a playground, and a picnic area located across from their Yellow Baboons and close to their Lemur Islands, making it an ideal spot for birthday parties or a picnic for the whole family.
Your kids are sure to be thrilled to see their very first giraffe or zebra outside of picture books! For those kids who love to explore the creepy-crawly part of the animal kingdom, there’s a section for all the bugs, reptiles, and arachnids too!
Daily feedings and talks take place all day but only at certain times, so be sure to schedule your day in advance so you don’t miss out on seeing your favourite animals in action!
Go to an Outdoor Movie
Summer is the prime time of the year for watching movies, especially while under the stars! Movie nights presented and hosted by Prospera Credit Union and Fresh Air Cinema not only include popcorn but also a wide range of activities we’re sure the kids will enjoy!
These two are not the only companies who show outdoor movies. As we mentioned before, so too does Krause Berry Farms! For only $5 you can enjoy all of their delicious food as well as popcorn while snuggling together under a blanket and watching the movie in their Fresh Family Fun Field.
Stay tuned to each company’s website to find the nearest showtimes and dates.
Summer reading is always a win-win if your kid is more of a ‘bookworm’ than anything. 2017 in particular is a special one as it marks the twentieth year when Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling was first published. What better way to celebrate the year than with Rowling’s books at the library?
Revisit the magic and wonder of the series with your kids or rent DVDs from there and bring them home if you don’t own them already! Check out the Abbotsford Community Library or the Mt Lehman Library for more details—they may also have some new books that will pique your little bookworm’s interest!

Cool Off at Cultus Lake Water Park

If the heat is dragging you down, there’s a way to beat it (especially this summer). Kids are sure to love visiting Cultus Lake Water Park for the day as there are all kinds of fun water-based things to do here besides swimming! This is best known as BC’s biggest water park for a good reason, given that it consists of over 16 giant water slides, five hot tubs, five restaurants, over 150 covered picnic tables, and even more wild attractions! Special events such as concerts also take place at this incredible water park.
If you want to spend more than one day only in the Cultus Lake area, there is also the adventure park located right across from the water park. The park is open even if the weather is rainy or smoky!
If you don’t have the time or the money to come to this attraction, you can always try our next suggestion instead:
Spend a Day in Mill Lake Park

Mill Park’s history is not the only thing to look forward to when it comes to visiting this hotspot in the Fraser Valley. There are lots of activities going on in the park that everyone can enjoy! Kids will love getting wet at the water park or playing at the playground. Pack and bring along a picnic basket and you’ve got an awesome summer day in the making. This would also be a great opportunity to get some photos of the kids while Mount Baker hangs out in the background!
We hope that’s enough things to do in Abbotsford to help beat the summer blues!
